Microsoft Excel Tutorial Series: The basic’s data entry and navigation

If you have not already read the brief introduction to Excel 2007 I would advise you do so before continuing on with this tutorial series. You may be asking yourself what is the point using Excel as an analysis platform when there are products such as Wealth Lab and TradeStation available. I think that it is important that every trader be able to understand the underlying concepts of the indicators they are using and be able to analyse data. By undertaking this tutorial series you will also get the chance to learn by doing, which helps re-enforces concepts much better than if you were to just passively read the articles.

When you first start Microsoft Excel 2007, you will be presented with a screen similar to the one shown below. The key areas and terminology are also highlighted. Read the full story

Trading Book Review Way of the Turtle

Amazon.com: Way of the Turtle: The Secret Methods that Turned Ordinary People into Legendary Traders: Books: Curtis FaithISBN: 007148664X
ISBN-13: 9780071486644

Way of the turtle begins with an explanation of the initial Turtle Trading experiment. This experiment came about after a dispute between Richard Dennis and Bill Eckhardt on the issue of weather great traders were born or made. Dennis had the view that an individual could be taught to be great trader while Eckhardt thought great traders required genetics and aptitude. In order to settle the matter ads were taken out in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times and Barron’s. The ads were for the position of trading apprentices and after an initial training period the trainee would be given an account to trade. Out of a thousand applicants 13 were selected, these trainees were known as the Turtles.

Curtis M. Faith, the youngest member of the original Turtle group, wrote way of the Turtle. It contains 278 pages not including the index forward and preface. The well-respected trading coach Van K. Tharp authored the preface and stated, “[Way of the Turtle] is one of the five best trading books ever written, and I will recommend that all my clients become familiar with its contents”.

Setting up a trading platform: The right computer software

The next piece in building a reliable trading system is choosing the right software. With 95% of brokers and market makers requiring a Windows based platform, Windows is the only logical choice in my opinion.

You may be asking what version of Windows is right for me. My answer to this question is quite simple, for computers with less than a 1GHz Pentium 4 processor and less then 1 gig of RAM; I would recommend sticking with Windows XP Professional. Computer’s with higher specs then this should be able to run Vista.

The first thing to do for anyone considering upgrading to Vista is a compatibility check. On this front Microsoft should be commended as they have released a tool that allows for quick and easy compatibility checking it is called Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor and can be downloaded from the Microsoft website.
